Jack's cook for the last twenty-five years of his life was Nellie Nally Connors.
In RECIPES FROM HAMMOND CASTLE, she has gathered together not only Jack's favorite recipes but combined them with
anecdotes about him and thoughtful insights and reflections about life at the
castle. In the summer of 2008, Hammond Castle finally implemented a decade-old idea by Hammond biographer, John Dandola, to restore the kitchen of the castle in true vintage style and dedicate it to Nellie. Nellie even appears as a character along with Hammond in Dandola's mystery novels, DEAD BY ALL APPEARANCES and DEAD IN SMALL DOSES, which are set at the castle during World War II. _______________________________________________________ |

Pictured on the cover of Jack's fictional works is what he called the Sun Room (the
museum now refers to it as the Side Chapel). This was his favorite spot to read
and write. Jack's father was a close friend of both Rudyard Kipling and H. Rider Haggard (author of KING SOLOMON'S MINES). Although Kipling thought Jack to have writing talent, Senior with the help of Edison succeeded in pointing the boy towards a more practical career. But Jack still continued to write in private. ECHOES FROM THE CASTLE WALLS is a collection of his horror and adventure stories which were published for the first time in 1999. New discoveries of more works expanded the book even further for its 2004 edition. |

__________________________________________________________________________________________ "A wealthy inventor and a brilliant mind who enjoyed the art of the short story, John Hays Hammond, Jr., traveled widely, knew many people in power, wrestled with the issues of his day, and spent his time recounting his adventures.…I liked this collection. Two really fun accounts: 'Scotland Yard and the Spy' [wherein] the author/inventor, during World War I, becomes mistaken for a German spy because of a simple prank and 'Madness in Santo Domingo' [in which] he sails his yacht to retrieve highly valued church pews for his own castle museum. Hammond does a crackerjack job of recounting these tales." Andrew Andrews, TRUE REVIEW April 2004 issue _______________________ "...his stories do show a passion and appreciation for the genre...certainly worth reading, especially if you wish to glimpse another side of one of the great American thinkers." Due largely to his wife's interests in astrology and the occult, Jack was gradually
won over out of scientific curiosity. He conducted several experiments with
psychics and the castle indeed seems to be haunted not only by Mr. and Mrs. Hammond
and their pets but by much older spirits attached to the building's more ancient
parts and artifacts. In true sitting-'round-the-campfire fashion, this book
recounts a great many of those eerie occurrences throughout the years. ________________________________________________________ ...folk literature in the truest sense. Dandola has taken the oral ghost tales told by local people who have lived in Hammond Castle in Gloucester, Massachusetts, and retold them in written form. The result is a charming collection of stories that give the reader a personal glimpse into the lives of John Hays Hammond, Jr. and his wife, Irene Fenton Hammond... Mary E. LIVING IN THE PAST, LOOKING TO THE FUTURE is an in-depth biography of John Hays Hammond, Jr., which finally saw print after more than five years of intense research and detective work. In the process, the author interviewed the last of Hammond's friends and associates (now, all sadly deceased) and he was granted full access of the museum archives which he also had to organize. By the time research was completed, the author had amassed his own personal archives which rival those of the museum. ______________________________________________________ "One of the most revealing and entertaining biographies of any inventor you will ever read." "Repeated tours of [Hammond Castle Museum] always left me wanting to know more about
the man who chose to make the castle his home.... Thankfully, LIVING IN THE PAST, LOOKING TO THE FUTURE is now available to fill in the gaps [about] one of America's great forgotten scientists. As evidenced by this biography, Hammond was quite a character and he led a life that never fails to entertain.... [John Dandola] preserves that life for the interest of generations to come."
